Ethiopian Coffee
Among coffee-producing countries, Ethiopia holds near-legendary status not only because it’s the “birthplace” of Arabica coffee, but also because it is simply unlike every other place in the coffee world. Unlike the vast majority of coffee-growing countries, the plant was not introduced as a cash crop through colonization. Instead, growing, processing, and drinking coffee is part of the everyday way of life, and has been for centuries, since the trees were discovered growing wild in forests and eventually cultivated for household use and commercial sale.
Coffee has been a major part of Ethiopian history since around the 9th century A.D. Ethiopia has a unique legend relating to the discovery of coffee. It is believed that coffee beans and plants must originally have been exported from Ethiopia to Yemen, where coffee was used by Sufi monks and mystics to keep themselves awake during long nights of meditation and prayer. This is supported by current thinking that the Coffee Arabica plant is indigenous to East Africa. Both countries have ‘origin’ legends. The Ethiopian legend was found in written form until A.D. 1671 and so it seems likely to be an apocryphal account.
